D23 2019: The Mandalorian Trailer Arrives, Obi-Wan Kenobi Series Announced, and The Clone Wars Set for February 2020

At the D23 Disney+ panel, not only did the above intense first trailer for The Mandalorian arrive, but Ewan McGregor came out to confirm he’s back for an Obi-Wan Kenobi series (!!), and The Clone Wars‘ return was announced for February 2020. They also talked about the Cassian Andor series, though not a lot of details were given for any of the upcoming shows, but head below for what little we did get.

For the Obi-Wan series, it’ll be set 8 years after the Revenge of the Sith, so those hoping for a Legends Kenobi novel adaptation (holds up hand) will be a little disappointed, but look, it’s Ewan McGregor, back as Obi-Wan…how could that be disappointing?! With all the scripts already written (hopefully we’ll learn who those writers are soon), it goes into production next year, so it looks like the wait won’t be long! Finger’s crossed Liam Neeson pops in as Force Ghost Qui-Gon Jinn, but other than that I have no hopes or wants because, at the very least, McGregor is back! While we wait, definitely check out the excellent Master & Apprentice novel!

The Cassain show will also start shooting next year and it takes place during the timeframe of Star Wars Rebels, after it’s second season, so he’ll likely be Fulcrum for the Rebellion at this point, seeing as Ahsoka Tano is taken off the board at this time. Could the show be named Fulcrum? It does have a title and Kathleen Kennedy didn’t let Diego Luna announce it yet, though the idea of Fulcrum could lead to a cool idea (per Club Jade on Twitter): it stars Cassian one season and someone else the next season. Part of me doubts it, but it would be a cool way to expand the show. Also, Dave Filoni’s reaction to someone asking him how he feels about Ahsoka coming to live-action is rather telling for the master of silence.

The Mandalorian trailer looks really intense and feels Star Wars, but something new, different, a vibe I’m really excited to see more of once the season starts in November. The effects look stellar, movie-like even, while the music by Ludwig Göransson matches the gritty, grounded look of the show and I’m excited to see the music-scape of Star Wars expand. Also, Ming-Na Wen (Agents of Shieldjoined the cast of the show, though no details on her character were revealed, though this might’ve been the best news about the show yet. Look for it November 12.

February 2020 will see The Clone Wars return with the “Siege of Mandalore,” and while there’s no extra details or a new trailer, we did get this cool new image below.

That’s it for the TV arm of Star Wars, but it’s quite crazy to see how much it’s already expanding. It would be nice if the next show would be female-fronted, as so far it’s all male-centered shows, while my nominations include the Ahsoka/Sabine show the Rebels finale teased or of course Doctor Aphra…always Doctor Aphra.
