Spurred on by new hopes across the galaxy, the New Republic, with the Jedi, launch an ambitious plan against the Yuuzhan Vong. Will this new push be enough to rid the galaxy of the invaders? Read on as we travel down Destiny’s Way!
After years of embittered losses across the galaxy – from a brutal initial invasion, biotech bred to destroy Jedi, and the loss of heroes across the battlefront – small victories are starting to add up for the New Republic and the Jedi Order, even despite the loss of Anakin Solo and supposed death of Jacen. In fact, these two helped strike major blows to the Yuuzhan Vong’s artillery: Jacen destroyed a World Brain that was designed to terraform Coruscant and Anakin Solo destroyed the voxyn, leaving the Jedi crucial openings to take out the Vong structure. Now, the New Republic might be gaining some offensive momentum against the Vong. With the help of Leia Organa-Solo, the Imperial Remnant is able to destroy a fleet of Vong. They are also aided by Jagged Fel and Chiss clawcrafts, showing the galactic alliances are growing stronger in face of the invasion. The Hapan leadership still stands behind Jaina Solo, despite a rocky start to their relationship, and Jaina is able to lead them in another victory against the Vong.
The New Republic even begins to rebuild. After the loss of Chief of State Borsk Fey’lya, and their capital planet Coruscant, the New Republic opens a new base of government on Mon Cala. Cal Omas becomes the new Chief of State and he seems to be gaining galactic acclaim. This even spurs Rebellion legend Admiral Gial Ackbar back into service, and he begins to devise a plan to destroy the Vong. He comes up with a – you guessed it – trap that would lead the Vong into a battle they could not win over Ebaq 9. On top of biological data gathered by Luke and Mara Jade Skywalker, the New Republic has an even better tactic to defeat the Vong: Vergere, a prisoner of war. She reveals that she was a former Jedi who was captured by the Vong in an effort to study the planet known as Zonoma Sekot. There, she was captured by the Vong but managed to hide her sensitivity to the Force in order to remain alive under their watch. This leads Luke to believe they are on the way to victory against the Vong, and he’s right. With limited ability to sense the Vong, a galactic alliance of the major factions that comprise the galaxy, with their fleets and weapons decimated, the Vong seem to be on the losing side of the war, finally.
But that’s not all: the Jedi Order is beginning to rise again. Luke Skywalker and Cal Omas are able to form a new Jedi Council, one governed by both Jedi and New Republic politicians. While many Jedi are Knighted in a large ceremony, Jaina Solo is named Sword of the Jedi by Luke. But that’s not the only good news for the Solo family: it seems as if Jacen Solo is still alive, and Leia and Jaina both sense him.
Ackbar’s plan against the Vong at Ebaq 9 is their strongest bet. They tried, á la Admiral Daala, to weaponize a virus against the Vong, but Vergere renders it inert before escaping. Instead of committing biological warfare, Ackbar concludes the New Republic should continue to practice their subterfuge against the Vong, convincing them they are developing yet another superweapon. The subterfuge? Making the Vong believe the weapon is useless, but the truth is it’s an old Imperial fortress that is turned against them.
Unbeknownst to the New Republic and Jedi Order, the Yuuzhan Vong are falling apart. The Vong’s invasion into this galaxy began when the Supreme Overlord Shimrra believed, or so the Vong thought, their gods were commanding this invasion. All of Vong culture moved around the behest of the gods, invading the galaxy thinking they were on the largest religious crusade ever mounted. But as they continue to lose, and the World Brains weren’t working the way they thought they should, division starts to rise within the Vong. Nom Amor begins to believe the gods commanded no such thing, and their invasion might have been in vain. Still, Nom Amor encourages the assault on Ebaq 9, led by Tsavong Lah. As another coalition stands against the Vong, the invaders lose and Jaina kills Tsavong Lah. Vergere is destroyed during the battle and Nom Amor quietly slips away.
With key leadership missing, the Vong seem to be on the outs. But a new major player is about to emerge in the war, and the tide of the battle is soon to shift..
