Star Wars Squadrons Provides Space Combat This October

Originally outed as Project Maverick by a PlayStation Store leak, then as Squadrons by an Xbox Store leak, EA’s Motive has unveiled a CGI trailer for Star Wars: Squadrons, with a gameplay reveal on June 18 at EA’s Play event! Head below for some details on what to expect when the game drops October 2.

Squadrons consists of 5v5 multiplayer modes and a singleplayer campaign, all set after the events of Return of the Jedi. For multiplayer, there are two modes: Fleet Battles, where you and your squadmates plan out and attack the opposing side’s flagship, and Dogfights, basically a deathmatch mode. Planets they teased players will fight over include Yavin Prime and “the shattered moon of Galitan.” All of this plays out in first person (!) and can be played in VR on PC and PS4. Of course there will be plenty of customization options, from weapons, hulls, and shields, or even cosmetic items for the ship or flight suits. I do appreciate them highlighting the fact that all of this can be received via gameplay, as the bad taste of Battlefront II’s early loot box fiasco is still fresh in everyone’s mouths (though that game has had an amazing resurgence!).

As for the singeplayer campaign, players will take control of customizable pilots in both the New Republic’s Vanguard Squadron (more about them in a minute!) and the Imperial Remnant’s Titan Squadron. It’s written by Mitch Dyer and Joanna Berry, and will feature both original characters and cameos. The first cameos were seen in the trailer above, like Wedge Antilles and General Hera Syndulla (also seen in the screenshot, a great first, the Starhawk ship), where Hera is wearing an outfit from her The Freemaker Adventures appearance, of all places! As for Vanguard squadron, they were first seen in canon thanks to the novel Alphabet Squadron, serving under Hera from her ship, the Lodestar.

Pick it up on Xbox One, PS4, PC, and VR on October 2 for $39.99. Play with or against me on PS4, my name is “BrushYourTeeth.” Check out the official site’s reveal for more details on what you receive if you have EA Access or Origin Access Basic.

And don’t forget to check out EA Play on June 18 for the gameplay reveal; we’ll update the site once it arrives!
