Canon Comic Review: Doctor Aphra #9

Doctor Aphra #9

– Spoiler Review –

Fresh off the Screaming Citadel crossover with the Star Wars series, Doctor Aphra #9 puts the titular character back on the search for more credits, setting up a black market bidding war on her newly awoken Rur crystal. As great as parts of the crossover were for Aphra, putting her back at the forefront of her own series in her own criminal corner of the galaxy is a refreshing reminder of her series’ potential in the first place, while the issue’s cliffhanger is going to have every Aphra fan praying to the Force for her and for more, as this is the series at its best! Doctor Aphra #8 - The Screaming Citadel Part 5

– Spoiler Review –

The Screaming Citadel crossover comes to a close in Part 5 – Doctor Aphra #8! While things don’t end as strong as they started, the finale delivers plenty of goods along its zany way, leaving the overall crossover as a memorable event and truly enjoyable experience. Doctor Aphra #7 - The Screaming Citadel Part 3

– Spoiler Review –

The fun and excitement of The Screaming Citadel crossover continues to build in Part 3 – Doctor Aphra #7! The reunion of Sana and Aphra is better than expected (and deadlier!), all the characters together is a blast (even if Leia feels slightly off), and despite the art feeling a bit out of place, things get even more out of control than I imagined was possible, making this another fine entry into what’s shaping up to be a memorable crossover. Doctor Aphra #5

Spoiler Review –

In Doctor Aphra #5, the first arc’s penultimate issue, neither plot nor character arcs are sacrificed as both advance in exciting and memorable ways only the Aphras can allow in another excellent and deep entry that makes the wait for the finale all the more antagonizing.  Continue reading “Canon Comic Review: Doctor Aphra #5”

Doctor Aphra and Star Wars Comics Star in Marvel’s The Screaming Citadel Crossover

The Screaming Citadel AnnouncementWhen I first saw the announcement, I thought it was a joke, as The Screaming Citadel sounds like something out of a campy horror B-movie. Thankfully it wasn’t though, as it sounds like Marvel’s next crossover (the first being Vader Down) looks to embrace the title’s tone and give us a gothic-horror story set in the Star Wars universe. Even better, it’s a crossover of the mainline Star Wars series with my absolute favorite comic character to date, Doctor Aphra! Check out some choice details below to find out what awaits you dear comic reader when the crossover begins this May. UPDATE: Marco Checchetto, who will have artist duties on the one-shot start to the crossover, shares some new character designs, so check that out below too! Doctor Aphra #3

Spoiler Review –

Aphra, her father, the muderbots, and Krrsantan head to Imperial-controlled Yavin IV…what could go wrong? In Doctor Aphra #3, it’s more of what surprisingly goes right, as the search for the Ordu Aspectu might not be as foolish as everyone once thought and Papa Aphra drops a doozy: Aphra’s full name! Doctor Aphra #2

Spoiler Review –

Rest assured, after Boop’s second issue, the good Doctor is in and firing on all cylinders, providing laughs at every turn of the page as Doctor Aphra #2 outdoes the first issue in every aspect. Just don’t call Aphra “Boop” ever again. Continue reading “Canon Comic Review: Doctor Aphra #2”

Canon Comic Review: Doctor Aphra #1

Doctor Aphra #1

– Spoiler Review –

I did my best to check my expectations and excitement at the door, but even though I mostly didn’t, Doctor Aphra #1, written by Kieron Gillen, art by Kev Walker, and colors by Antonio Fabela, does not disappoint, kicking off the series in as delightful and humorous fashion as one comes to expect from anything having to do with the good Doctor. It establishes the series’ more intimate focus, builds on Aphra’s many great characteristics, and gives her co-stars a chance to shine as they are want to do. And to sweeten the pot, there’s a flashback one-shot delving into the tale of how Aphra got her doctorate, brought to life by Gillen and Darth Vader series veterans Salvador Larroca and Edgar Delgado.
