After a year of waiting, the secretive Project Luminous was revealed as The High Republic, a giant publishing initiative which would span different mediums and tell one big, connected story set some 200 years before The Phantom Menace. Even after a delay due to COVID-19, the hype for the era was real, and its opening salvo brought the new era to vivid and exciting life, fulfilling the promise of something new and different. By the end of Phase 1, almost a year and a half later, fan reaction could best be summed up to how the luminous codename for The High Republic turned into a loving nickname for the authors, and even in the months since it closed in March 2022, it’s clear the era has sparked its own part of the fanbase, filling up a Celebration panel about the upcoming Phase II even. While it won’t answer all the questions, The High Republic – Eye of the Storm #2 is the definitive ending to Phase I, allowing Charles Soule to bookend the era he helped start with a packed and intriguing glimpse into Marchion Ro’s plans, motivations, and the mysterious creatures he’s unleashed on the Jedi, setting up in equal parts for Phase II and Phase III. Shima Shinya, this time with Daniel José Older, and Mizuki Sakakibara return to further expand the adventures of Lily Tora-Asi and the Jedi Temple on Banchii in The Edge of Balance Vol. 2, published by Viz Media LLC. With the temple fresh off the recent Drengir attack, it finds itself struggling to prepare for any further fights, and in the process gets caught up in the era’s bigger events, robbing some of the magic which made the first volume special, but it still remains an unique and intriguing viewpoint into the era. In terms of Star Wars storytelling, 2021 started off with an engaging, mutli-layered, and exciting new era, one of its most ambitious publishing initiatives yet: The High Republic. Spreading across books, comics, and more, the era brought new heroes, dastardly and scary villains, and a plethora of new designs and concepts in the galaxy far, far away. For the comics side of things, Marvel unleashed The High Republic, a comic series following Jedi Knight Keeve Trennis and her Master Sskeer, as well as other notable Jedi of the era like Avar Kriss, as they dealt with the ravenous Drengir. To help writer Cavan Scott bring the horrors of the Drengir, the righteousness of Keeve and Kriss, Sskeer’s mysterious struggles, and epic-sized action to the pages of the comic, Marvel tapped Ario Anindito…and our eyeballs have never been the same, in the best way possible! This masterful artist has brought scary panels and tender moments to vivid, detailed life, so I reached out to him to understand how he does it, the pressures of building up a new era, and so much more. Emerick Caphtor and Sian Holt’s investigation into the death of Loden Greatstorm has been one stellar issue after another, full of noir and style, humor and compassion, terror even.
