Adaptations of the Star Wars films are a fact of life, starting back in 1976 with Star Wars by Alan Dean Foster. Though most adaptations are mostly passable, that trend changed with Revenge of the Sith by Matthew Stover. The Last Jedi‘s novelization stands tall as one of the best adaptations of all, taking a great film and making it so much richer and beautiful.

There have been short story collections in the Star Wars universe before, but nothing quite like this! From a Certain Point of View gathers together 43 authors for 40 stories giving us new perspectives on Episode IV: A New Hope, as a celebration of the film’s 40th Anniversary (bonus: all the author proceeds go to the charity First Book!). In short, the stories within had me crying, laughing, and filled me up with joyous wonder, much like A New Hope did and continues to do 40 years later, which is a pretty fitting way to celebrate the 40th anniversary, if you ask me! Thursday evening, Del Rey (at their @DelReyStarWars account) stirred up Star Wars fandom on Twitter by teasing the announcement of something called Operation Blue Milk. The hashtag, #OperationBlueMilk quickly blew up with speculation followed by various authors, some new and old to SW writing, revealing they were part of the project. While Amazon might have beat Del Rey to the official announcement, the details have finally been released and it’s a pretty exciting surprise: 40 different authors retelling events from A New Hope from random background characters’ points of view! Whether or not this is your cup of caf, you should probably pick this up because not only is the talent involved nothing short of spectacular, all author proceeds are being donated to charity (!!) so read on for the list and more details! Recently, massive multi-media pushes have accompanied everything from films to new TV shows to video games. Battlefront was accompanied by the Twilight Company novel, while Rebels gained a little supplementary material from My Rebel Sketchbook. The Force Awakens got two supplementary young reader’s books: both Rey’s Survival Journal and Poe Dameron: Flight Log, or even retellings such as Finn’s Story. Similarly, Rogue One released alongside the Rebel Dossier. How does this dossier stack up against the previous supplements?

The Weapon of a Jedi is a Luke Skywalker-centric YA novel in the “Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” initiative, set between Ep. IV and V, written by Jason Fry with art by Phil Noto. Having read The Weapon of a Jedi last amongst the Big Three focused novels, I have to say Luke’s falls somewhere in the middle, as it has the light, fun adventure of Smuggler’s Run, but it also gets close to the level of introspective for its lead character as Moving Target did. With one of better Luke characterizations in recent memory (alongside the current on-going comics) and intriguing, thought-provoking Force training, The Weapon of a Jedi is the best Luke focused novel of the new canon, though it falters a little with the maybe too mysterious Sarco Plank. Moving Target is a Leia-centric YA novel in the “Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens” initiative, set between Ep. V and VI, co-authored by Cecil Castellucci and Jason Fry, with artwork from Phil Noto. While the term YA might conjure up fears and prejudices, Moving Target should not be missed thanks to its solidly written Leia, overall enjoyable tale, and rather adult subject matter covering topics like the costs of always just fulfilling your duty and sacrificing a few to save many.
