Thrawn – Treason is the final book of Timothy Zahn’s canon Thrawn Trilogy and another entry sandwiched between episodes of Star Wars Rebels, asking us once again to ignore the destination and enjoy the journey. Unfortunately, Treason doesn’t give readers the opportunity to ignore the destination anymore, aka the finale to Rebels, as the journey feels like treason against us readers. There already some great novels coming in 2019, like Master & Apprentice and Queen’s Shadow, but add another to the must-read list as Timothy Zahn returns with Thrawn – Treason, the third book in his Thrawn series. Also announced is a new comic miniseries, Vader – Dark Visions, an intriguing sounding series but it’s announcement raises some questions and concerns, especially if it’s a replacement for the now cancelled Vader mini, Shadow of Vader. Thrawn – Alliances, written by Timothy Zahn, follows Grand Admiral Thrawn and Darth Vader tasked with hunting down a mysterious disturbance in the Force, out near the Unknown Regions, while a story in the past sees Anakin Skywalker meet Thrawn for the very first time as Padmé investigates her friend’s disappearance. More exciting and intriguing than the first novel, Alliances’ double-timeline plot keeps the pace flying and the various POVs are engaging with Padmé’s material being the best of the novel, though one era suffers slightly from drawing out its revelations, while Zahn’s unwillingness to give Thrawn any real weaknesses is detrimental to the character here. The Legendary Adventures makes its next stop at Outbound Flight, Timothy Zahn’s earliest chronological novel about Thrawn. A temporary peace has been struck across the galaxy as the Trade Federation is put under heavy penalties after the Crisis on Naboo. Now, the Republic authorizes a mission to the outermost regions of the galaxy, seeking to meet new lifeforms and expand Republic culture beyond its current bounds.

Grand Admiral Thrawn has held a special place in many fan’s hearts and his return to canon in Star Wars Rebels was one of joyous celebration (at Celebration, no less). Even better, another Star Wars legend was announced to return as well: the mastermind behind Thrawn himself, Timothy Zahn, set to write the Grand Admiral’s canon origin story in, you guessed it, Thrawn. Anyone who’s read a Star Wars novel from Zahn is in for the same treat they’ve come to expect, while new characters, especially Rebels’ Arihnda Pryce, overshadow the titular character in an enjoyable tale of mystery, intrigue, and ambitions while watching the Chiss (re)rise through the Imperial ranks.
