Cassian & K-2SO Meet In Marvel One-Shot Rogue One Prequel (UPDATED)

Fresh off of Thursday’s Mace Windu comic news, Friday saw the reveal of a special one-shot focusing on how Cassian Andor and K-2SO from Rogue One met! Titled Rogue One – Cassian & K-2SO Special #1, it’ll be written by Duane Swierczynski, with art by Fernando Blanco, dropping this August. Check out the full cover and some assorted musings below. UPDATE 6/1/17: Both Swierczynski and Blanco were interviewed by Marvel recently. UPDATE 8/10/17: Here’s my review.

This comic leaves Bodhi as the only main Rogue One character yet to have his backstory fleshed out in a different medium, as Baze and Chirrut had Guardians of the Whills and Jyn has both Rebel Rising (still reading that right now) and Catalyst.

And considering this is a tie-in, it seems my theory from my 2016 comics year-in-review that the tie-in is dead was a little preemptive. I only made that guess due to how the C-3PO tie-in for The Force Awakens got delayed to the point no matter how great it was it felt a little pointless and an initial announcement for both a 3-issue and one-shot prequel to Rogue One seemed to disappear/be cancelled. However, by not announcing what either of those series were going to contain, their disappearances weren’t as noticeable as it was for the Threepio comic, but it seems like this Cassian and Kaytoo issue could be what the one-shot originally mentioned back in March of last year turned out to be. Either way, I’m definitely looking forward to learning how these two met and I hope it involves some of Cassian’s less than savory intelligence tactics…and a good slap or two from Kaytoo!

UPDATE: If one thing is clear from the interview, both writer and artist paint this special to be a true buddy cop story set in Star Wars, showing that not everything related to Rogue One has to match its darker tone. Swierczynski talks a little about the process for pitching the idea with the Story Group at Lucasfilm (which in the interview is spelled incorrectly…I mean, seriously Marvel, LucasFilm?) while Blanco name drops two twin rebel aliens he created, Rismor and Kertas. The more I hear about this, the more I’m excited for it.
