October is set to be an eventful month, as my wife and I finally will have our postponed wedding ceremony and go on our honeymoon, and maybe celebrate my birthday in there somewhere! So it’s little anxiety inducing for me to see that it’ll also be an eventful month for Star Wars comics: The High Republic era deals with some shocking events in the most recent novel releases, while the months-long epic mega crossover event War of the Bounty Hunters comes to its conclusion in October, where it promises to change the status quo of Star Wars comics. After a month’s long “Prelude,” the first issue of the War of the Bounty Hunters miniseries had a lot to prove, as the overall crossover’s daunting 34-issue total so far hadn’t had a great enough spark, but I had faith in miniseries writer and crossover architect Charles Soule…and holy Mother of Moons did he deliver with a fun, sprawling issue that ends on a big, game-changing surprise. By July, with the War of the Bounty Hunters mega-crossover in full swing, you might find yourself if the frozen popsicle of Han Solo will really be worth all this trouble or you might be enjoying the shenanigans of this interconnected, multi-series story too much to sweat the small stuff. Clearly we all underestimated the upcoming War of the Bounty Hunters crossover, as the June 2021 Star Wars comics solicitations reveal it not only has the prelude issues in May, but it’ll have both the miniseries and tie-in issues going forward, through October! And here I was originally assuming this would lead into a Shadows of the Empire-type event, but it seems this is that big event itself! So read on below to learn about Chewbacca battling Valance (expect limbs to be lost!), Vader and Ochi going up against IG-88 (is there enough ‘man’ left in Vader to defeat this machine?), and Doctor Aphra and Sana Starros come face to face with….DURGE?! Yes, that Durge! Also coming in June, Pride Variant covers, which is a nice touch though I wish they could’ve offered more, like a full issue of Pride-related Star Wars tales…but I’ll take this for now!
